NCAA tournament success pays dividends for coaching staffs, conferences

Remaining games in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament will help determine the distribution of big money to conferences, schools and coaching staffs.

The coaches’ payouts come in the form of myriad incentive bonuses. Below are the bonuses earned by, and still available, to head coaches of public-school teams that advanced to this week’s round of 16 games. In some cases, their assistant coaches have similar, albeit smaller, bonuses at stake.

Some schools’ athletics directors also are eligible for bonuses based on these teams’ NCAA tournament appearances and/or the team winning the national championship.

Arizona’s Sean Miller

Has:

$20,000: 20 to 24 regular-season wins

$75,000: NCAA tournament round of 16

Can get:

$50,000: Make round of eight

$175,000: Final Four

$375,000: NCAA title

Florida’s Billy Donovan

Has:

$50,000: SEC regular-season champ

$37,500: NCAA tournament bid

$37,500: Round of 16

Can get:

$25,000: Make Final Four

$150,000: Win NCAA title

Florida Gulf Coast’s Andy Enfield

Has:

$5,000: NCAA tournament bid

$10,000: Round of 16

Can get:

$15,000: Make Final Four

$20,000: NCAA final

$25,000: NCAA title

Indiana’s Tom Crean

Has:

$125,000: Big Ten regular-season title

$25,000: NCAA tournament bid

$25,000: Round of 32

$35,000: Round of 16

Can get:

$50,000: Make round of eight

$125,000: Final Four

$250,000: NCAA title

Kansas’ Bill Self

Has:

$50,000: Big 12 regular-season title

$25,000: Big 12 tournament title

Louisville’s Rick Pitino

Has:

$50,000: Big East regular-season co-champion

$50,000: Big East tournament title

$50,000: NCAA tournament round of 16

Michigan’s John Beilein

Has:

$25,000: NCAA tournament bid

$50,000: Gets $25,000 for each NCAA tournament win

Has:

$25,000: NCAA tournament bid

$25,000: Round of 16

Can get:

$125,000: Make Final Four, including $25,000 from Nike*

$200,000: NCAA title, including $50,000 from Nike*

Ohio State’s Thad Matta

Has:

$40,000, plus one-year contract extension worth at least $2.567 million: Big Ten tournament title

$40,000: NCAA tournament bid

Can get:

$20,000: Make round of eight

$20,000: Final Four

$100,000: NCAA title

Oregon’s Dana Altman

Has:

$15,000: Pac-12 second place

$30,000: Pac-12 tournament title

$20,000: NCAA tournament bid

$7,500: First NCAA tournament win

$10,000: Second win

Can get:

$12,500: Third NCAA tournament win

$25,000: Fourth win

$40,000: Fifth win

$200,000: Sixth win

Wichita State’s Gregg Marshall

Has:

$20,000: Winning conference record

$20,000: 20-plus regular-season wins

$108,000: Gets $36,000 for each NCAA tournament game played

$60,000: Additional for round of 16

Can get:

$108,000: $36,000 for each NCAA tournament game played

$100,000: Additional for Final Four

$200,000: Additional for NCAA title
